The Legendary Hoppies

We left at dawn with 10 other boats as we had coordinated with the lock master for an early transit.

The Mel Price lock, down 23 feet.

One lock down, one more to go.

Second lock of the day has twin chambers. We were directed to the smallest of the 2. Down 12 feet.

Our approach to St Louis; Surprisingly enough, St Louis has no marinas, they are a very busy, working port….lots of Tow traffic especially since we are traveling during the harvest.

We had a buddy boat take this money shot. The St Louis Arch is a landmark representing the gateway to the west.

The Mississippi…rougher, muddier, wider and faster current.

This is Hoppies…safe refuge for the night. It is the only place around where you can tie up. They have a few barges tied together….they have fuel and electricity. They lost everything 3 years ago when ice flow hit them. They were able to partially rebuild and reopen last year.

The owners are now in their 80’s and can no longer come down the hill so their daughter gives the briefing. They have been guiding boats down the river all their lives. Top of the agenda today however is a barge has come aground south of us and the river is closed to all traffic, so we will have to stay here until they open up again. Party on the barge tonight 😬

The river is so low at the moment that New Orleans is closed to water traffic….the tows can’t get through. It was only a matter of time for a barge to come aground.

On the other hand, the little town of Kimmswick is delightful….full of specialty shops and country restaurants unfortunately closed to men for the day.

Our track for the day! The red sections of the route shows the 2+ knots of current bumping are speed over 10 knots.

This morning’s congregation discussing the river closure.  Get comfortable….wish I would have packed my witche hat 🧙‍♀️
