Peterborough Lift Lock

The famous Peterborough lift lock….a marvel of engineering.  Two big bathtubs on hydraulic cylinders counterbalance each other.

The starboard side was ready, so we pulled in, tied up and up came the back gate.

We go up 65 feet in 90 seconds, while the other chamber comes down. Sounds cool? Even cooler than it sounds…😎

We tied to the wall here and spent the night….watched this tour boat come up the lock.

View from below during our evening walk.

Beautiful evening.

~~~~~~
Fun facts:
-First lock built out of concrete
-Built in 1904, it was the largest structure ever built with unreinforced concrete
-The lift lock functions by gravity alone
